Starts at 8:30am with a honor guard and drum and bugle corps marching from the Long Lake Town Hall to the bridge for a ceremony honoring those lost at sea. The honor guard then returns to the Town Hall and the parade forms up to march to the cemetery for a ceremony. After this ceremony, the parade reforms to march to the Viet Nam Memorial at Mt. Foot traffic is eroding the soil on Adirondack High Peaks, which puts rare alpine plants at risk for local extinction. Join The Wild Center, Adirondack Mountain Club and Adirondack Nature Conservancy in efforts to preserve these delicate regions by carrying a rock to the top of Wright Peak. Rocks will be used to line the trails so that hikers can easily tell where it is safe to walk and where to leave space for plants. The hike will be lead by an experienced Summit Steward, who will keep a reasonable pace for hikers at varied level of experience and educate the group on alpine ecology along the way. The hike will start and end at the Adirondack Mountain Club’s Visitor Center at Heart Lake. Pre-registration for this event is required. Packets containing directions to the Heart Lake Visitor’s Center, equipment list and details about the day will be sent out upon registration for the event. Change for Skeptics

Dr. Curt Stager, Professor of Natural Sciences at
Paul Smith’s College, will be giving a presentation on
what scientists know for certain about climate change in the
Adirondacks, as well as what questions still remain. The talk
will cover the natural causes of climate change and will consider
how current trends suggest that natural causes are not to blame
for the Earth’s rising temperature in recent decades. Dr. Stager
will also discuss how political and social agendas of skeptics
have affected climate change study and the dissemination of facts
to the general public. Stager will also address the positive and
negative contributions so-called skeptics can make to the study of
climate change, its effects and our responses to those changes.
Curt Stager is a paleolimnologist who has been studying
microscopic fossils in ice core samples from Adirondack lakes,
which have helped him to compile a history of climate change in
the Park. Free for

08/23,24...Lumberjack Thistle Regatta...begins at the New York State Boat Launch on Route 30 just outside of Tupper Lake. The “Around-The-Islands” races begin at the north end of Tupper Lake, then taking a route southwest passing through the channel between Bluff and County Line Islands and back.
